Conflict The President of Ukraine increases the Army by 100,000 soldiers
US Secretary of State
Antony Blinken
urged Russia on Tuesday to reduce tension over Ukraine and withdraw the army from the border with the country, according to a statement released after a phone call with his Russian counterpart
Sergey Lavrov
.
Blinken "stressed that a new invasion of Ukraine would bring swift and severe consequences and urged Russia to follow the diplomatic path," the State Department reported.
"The secretary of state underscored the willingness of the United States, bilaterally and with our allies and partners, to pursue an exchange with Russia on mutual security concerns," the statement continued.
Blinken "urged Russia to immediately de-escalate and withdraw troops and equipment from the Ukraine border," the State Department continued.
He also "urged Russia to
take the diplomatic route
" instead of conflict.
The United States accuses the Kremlin of preparing an invasion of Ukraine, a country already torn since 2014 by a civil war in the East between forces in Kiev and pro-Russian separatists backed by Moscow.
